The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Mastering the Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween

The Importance of Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules in Quran Recitation

The rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween are among the most important foundations of Tajweed that every Muslim should learn. They occur frequently throughout the verses of the Quran. Applying these rules correctly helps protect the tongue from pronunciation errors and enables Muslims to recite the Book of Allah accurately.

The Four Main Rules: Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, and Ikhfa

The applicable rule depends on the letter that follows Noon Sakinah or Tanween. There are four main rules:

Izhar Halqi, which occurs with the six throat letters;

Idgham, which occurs with the letters in the word (Yarmaloon);

Iqlab, where Noon Sakinah or Tanween is changed into a Meem sound before the letter Baa;

and Ikhfa Haqiqi, which occurs with the remaining fifteen Arabic letters.

How Can You Easily Distinguish Between Izhar Halqi and Ikhfa Haqiqi During Recitation?

Izhar requires pronouncing the Noon clearly without adding extra nasalization when it is followed by one of the throat letters. In Ikhfa, the Noon sound is pronounced in an intermediate manner between Izhar and Idgham, while maintaining the nasal sound (Ghunnah) for two counts. Mastering these rules requires regular practice through direct instruction and recitation under the guidance of a qualified Tajweed teacher.
